Vietnam Market Entry via Creators
Selling in Vietnam as a Foreign Brand: Four E-commerce Entry Routes and the Creator Plan for Each
A foreign brand that wants to sell in Vietnam does not choose a platform first. It chooses a route, because the route decides who can open the shop, who holds the product documents and who can run creator affiliate. This guide compares four routes: a cross-border marketplace store, a local distributor or importer, your own Vietnamese entity, and TikTok Shop, which has its own seller rules. For each one we say what the platform pages we read actually require, what we could not verify, and how to plan creators so that content, links and responsibility line up. It is not tax or legal advice; confirm customs, tax and licensing with Vietnamese advisers before you commit.

Short answer
How can a foreign brand sell online in Vietnam?
There are four practical routes. A cross-border store on a marketplace such as Shopee or Lazada ships from abroad, with eligibility set by each platform. A local distributor or importer sells under its own shop with your authorization. Your own Vietnamese entity gives most control. TikTok Shop requires Vietnam-registered corporate sellers, so it runs through the entity or distributor routes.
- Cross-border store: lowest commitment, but customs, shipping time and platform eligibility apply
- Distributor or importer: fastest local setup, brand authorization and marketing split must be written down
- Own Vietnamese entity: most control, longest setup
- TikTok Shop: corporate sellers must be registered in Vietnam; individual sellers must be Vietnamese citizens
- Creator affiliate depends on which entity owns the shop
- Check who is named on product documents before any creator talks about the product
1. Choose a route before a platform
Platforms differ, but four questions decide your route: who can legally open the shop, who holds product documents and import responsibility, who can run creator affiliate, and who owns price and content decisions. A route that fails any of these will fail the creator plan as well.
Treat the four routes below as building blocks. Many brands start with a distributor or cross-border test and move to their own entity once demand is proven.
2. Route one: cross-border marketplace store
Shopee Korea's Vietnam entry page tells Korean sellers a business registration certificate is enough to start, and lists the steps: create a seller account, set up the shop, check logistics, then optimise and market. It adds that listings can be in English or Vietnamese with free translation of product names and descriptions.
Lazada's cross-border registration page says the cross-border store type is for business licences from mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan and Korea, and that one set of documents can open stores in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Vietnam. Sellers holding local licences in those markets use local stores instead. Eligibility for other countries is not stated on the page we read, so check the current Lazada page for yours.
3. What cross-border stores must watch
Shopee Korea's Vietnam page flags that for certain product categories a 1,000,000 VND limit applies at the customs clearance date, and tells sellers to follow the latest customs notices. Its cross-border seller terms say the seller is responsible for taxes and duties, that cross-border trade follows import and export law, and that the listed price includes sales tax, VAT and duties charged to the buyer.
Cosinkorea reported in July 2026 that Vietnam has applied 10% VAT to express imports under 1 million VND since 18 February 2025 and, from 1 June 2026, has platforms pay tax for foreign firms selling directly without Vietnamese registration. We did not verify these against the legal text, so confirm with a customs or tax adviser before you price.
4. Route two: local distributor or importer
A distributor sells under its own business registration and shop, using your authorization. This is often the fastest way to get a local seller entity. It also means someone else controls price, stock and, often, the shop you want creators to link to.
Put the split in the distribution agreement: who runs creator campaigns, who approves content, who pays creators, who owns the content rights, and who holds the product documents. Metric's January 2026 summary says Mall-type programmes ask distributors for a valid authorization letter from the brand owner or a higher-level distributor, so keep those letters current.
5. Route three: your own Vietnamese entity
A Vietnamese entity can open corporate seller accounts, hold the trademark, appear as the responsible party and run creator affiliate directly. The cost is time and compliance: incorporation, tax registration, accounting and licences for your product category.
We do not give timelines or fees here because we did not verify them. The practical point for creators is that one entity can sign creator contracts, pay them and own the content rights, which removes the three-way split a distributor route creates.
6. Route four: TikTok Shop
TikTok Shop Vietnam's Seller Registration Guidelines say individual sellers must be Vietnamese citizens and corporate sellers must be entities registered in Vietnam. Nothing in those guidelines describes a ship-from-abroad corporate seller, so for a foreign brand TikTok Shop runs through your own entity or an authorised distributor.
Brand authorization then gates what the shop can list, and the Mall programme adds more requirements. If creators are the main reason you want TikTok Shop, decide the entity and authorization first, then brief creators.
7. Creator plan by route
Match creator activity to what each route allows.
- Cross-border store: use creators to test demand and drive traffic to the listing; ship samples locally if possible because international shipping slows seeding; check which affiliate options the marketplace gives cross-border shops
- Distributor: agree who briefs, approves and pays creators; make sure creator links point to the distributor shop; secure content rights in the distribution agreement
- Own entity: run the full programme in house or with an agency, including affiliate, seeding and reporting
- TikTok Shop: creators and KOC affiliate run through the Vietnam-registered shop that holds brand authorization
8. Who must be named in creator content
Vietnam's Advertising Law, as amended by Law 75/2025/QH15 and in force from 1 January 2026, requires influencers to announce an ad immediately before or during the content and to check the advertiser and the product documents. In every route you need to know which entity is the advertiser and which documents prove the product.
Put the answer in the brief: the advertiser's name, the product documents creators may rely on, and the claim sheet. Do not let a creator promote a product when you cannot say who is responsible for it.
9. A simple decision guide
Use these rules of thumb, not as advice for your case.
- Testing demand with minimal commitment: cross-border store, if you meet the platform's eligibility
- Needing a local seller quickly: distributor, with a written marketing split
- Planning long-term growth and creator programmes: own entity, possibly after a distributor phase
- Wanting TikTok Shop: entity or distributor first, then brand authorization, then creators
10. Mistakes to avoid
Do not pick a platform and discover later that you are not eligible to open a shop there. Do not sign a distribution agreement that is silent on creator content rights and approvals.
Do not brief creators before the legal seller, listing and product documents are settled. And do not copy a fee table from a third-party article into your plan; platform fees change, so read the platform's own page.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can a foreign company open a TikTok Shop store in Vietnam?
TikTok Shop Vietnam's guidelines say corporate sellers must be entities registered in Vietnam and individuals must be Vietnamese citizens. Foreign brands usually use their own Vietnamese entity or a distributor.
Can Korean sellers use Shopee without a Vietnamese company?
Shopee Korea's Vietnam page says a business registration certificate is enough to start, and Lazada's cross-border page covers Korean licences. Check customs, tax and category rules before listing.
Which route is best for creator campaigns?
Routes with a Vietnam-registered seller make creator affiliate and contracts simpler. A cross-border store can test demand but may limit sampling and tracked links.
Who pays customs and tax on cross-border orders?
Shopee Korea's seller terms say the seller is responsible for taxes and duties. Recent rule changes were reported in the press, so confirm with a customs or tax adviser.
