KOC Freecast Model in Vietnam: When Commission-Only Seeding Works

The KOC freecast model is a Vietnamese creator deal with no upfront booking fee: the brand sends a sample, the KOC makes content with an affiliate link, and the creator earns commission on the orders they generate. It is popular because it looks almost free. In practice it works well for some products and only burns samples for others, so this guide gives the decision rules, the costs teams forget, and an opt-in form you can copy.

Short answer

Quick answer: when does a KOC freecast campaign work?

Freecast works when the product is already live on TikTok Shop or Shopee with a competitive affiliate commission, is easy to demonstrate on camera, and has enough margin to pay commission after sample and shipping costs. It fails when the product needs explanation, has no shop listing yet, or the commission is too low for creators to bother.

  • No upfront fee; creators earn affiliate commission per order
  • Real costs: samples, packaging, shipping, coordination, commission
  • Best for demo-friendly, impulse-priced products with a live listing
  • Weak for new brands with no reviews or complex products
  • Expect some creators not to post; plan for it
  • Disclosure rules still apply even without a fee

1. What is the KOC freecast model?

In the KOC freecast model, a brand does not pay the creator a fixed fee to make content. Instead, the creator receives a free sample, publishes a review with an affiliate link or code, and earns commission when viewers buy through it. Vietnamese agencies describe it as affiliate cooperation without an upfront booking fee; bookingfreecast.vn, one of the agencies that uses the term, defines freecast exactly that way.

The word is Vietnamese industry slang, not a platform feature. On TikTok Shop it usually runs through the affiliate programme, where creators add the product to their showcase and the platform tracks commission. Variants exist: some deals add a performance bonus, some add a small production allowance, and some agencies charge the brand a coordination fee for recruiting and chasing creators.

  • Pure freecast: sample plus affiliate commission only
  • Freecast with KPI bonus: extra reward if agreed results are hit
  • Freecast with support fee: small allowance for production
  • Freecast campaign: many KOCs post around the same concept and dates

2. Freecast vs paid booking vs gifting

Freecast sits between gifting and paid booking. With gifting, you send product and hope for a post with no obligation. With paid booking, you pay a fee for guaranteed deliverables. With freecast, the creator agrees to post but is paid only through commission, so their effort depends on how saleable they think your product is.

That difference matters for planning. A paid booking buys certainty and control over timing and messaging. Freecast buys volume and real-user content at low fixed cost, but with less control and less certainty that every sample becomes a video.

  • Paid booking: fixed fee, agreed deliverables, strongest control
  • Freecast: no fee, commission only, medium control, uncertain completion
  • Gifting: no fee, no obligation, lowest control

3. When KOC freecast works: six decision rules

Freecast works when a creator can reasonably expect to earn from the video. Creators choose which samples to accept, and experienced KOCs quickly skip products that do not convert.

Use these rules before you commit samples. If three or more are false, a paid booking or a smaller seeding test is usually the better route.

  • The product is live on TikTok Shop or Shopee with an affiliate plan set up
  • The commission rate is competitive for the category on that platform
  • The product is easy to show on camera: texture, before and after, unboxing, demo
  • The price suits an impulse purchase from a short video
  • The listing already has some ratings and reviews, so viewers trust it
  • Your margin can absorb commission after sample, packaging and shipping

4. When freecast only burns samples

Freecast fails predictably in a few situations, and most of them are visible before the first box ships.

Example: a new serum brand with no TikTok Shop listing yet sends samples to 40 KOCs under a freecast deal. Creators cannot attach a product link, so there is nothing to earn; a handful post out of goodwill, most do not, and the brand concludes freecast does not work. The real problem was sequencing: the shop and affiliate plan had to exist first.

  • No live listing or affiliate plan yet
  • Products that need explanation, prescriptions or regulated claims
  • High-ticket items where a single short video rarely closes the sale
  • Commission set below what similar products offer
  • Samples sent without a signed opt-in, so nobody has agreed to anything

5. The real cost of a KOC freecast campaign

Freecast is not free. It moves cost from fees to product and operations, and those costs are easy to underestimate because they are spread across departments.

Build a per-creator cost line before you decide volume. Multiply it by the number of samples, then divide by the number of videos you realistically expect, not by the number of samples sent. That gives an honest cost per video to compare with paid booking.

  • Product cost of each sample, at cost price
  • Packaging, inserts and shipping, including reshipping
  • Coordination fee if an agency recruits and follows up
  • Affiliate commission on every attributed order
  • Platform fees on those orders
  • Team time for recruiting, chasing and checking posts
  • Optional: production support or KPI bonuses

6. Acceptance and posting rates: the factors that move them

There is no reliable industry figure for how many freecast creators accept a sample or actually post, and anyone quoting one is describing their own campaigns. What you can control are the factors that move those rates.

Track your own numbers by campaign: invitations sent, opt-ins, samples delivered, videos posted, videos with sales. After two or three campaigns you will have a baseline that is far more useful than a benchmark from someone else's category.

  • Commission rate compared with similar products
  • Perceived product quality and brand recognition
  • Listing quality: price, ratings, reviews, stock
  • How clear and short the brief is
  • Speed of shipping after opt-in
  • Whether you follow up politely and on time

7. A sample opt-in form for freecast creators

The most effective control in freecast is a short opt-in form completed before any sample ships. It turns a vague yes on chat into a written agreement and gives operations the data it needs.

Keep it to one screen. A Google Form, a Zalo mini form or your CRM's intake page all work, as long as the answers land in the same place as your bookings.

  • TikTok handle and profile link, plus other channels
  • Full name, phone and delivery address for the sample
  • Product and variant requested
  • Confirmation of the affiliate commission rate offered
  • Expected posting window, for example within 10 days of delivery
  • Agreement to disclose advertising and follow the brief's claim rules
  • Agreement on content reuse by the brand, if you want it
  • What happens if the creator decides not to post

8. The freecast brief: lighter, but not optional

Freecast creators are not paid a fee, so a long brief will reduce opt-ins. But a few points are non-negotiable, because the brand is still the advertiser and carries responsibility for claims.

Give creators the hook ideas and selling points that actually convert, the claims they may and may not make, and how to tag the product. Leave format and style to them; that freedom is part of why freecast content feels authentic.

  • Three key selling points and one proof point
  • Approved and forbidden claims, especially for cosmetics and supplements
  • How to add the product link or showcase item
  • Disclosure wording and placement
  • Posting window and how to send the live link

9. Is freecast content still advertising under Vietnamese law?

Yes, a commission arrangement is still a commercial relationship, so treat freecast videos as advertising. Under the amended Advertising Law 75/2025/QH15, Article 15a, in force since 1 January 2026, influencers carrying advertising must verify the advertiser, must not introduce products they have not used or do not understand, and must announce the advertisement immediately before and during it.

The Law on E-commerce 122/2025/QH15 and Decree 248/2026/ND-CP, in force from 1 July 2026, add rules for affiliate and livestream selling. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade's summary of the new rules, parties in affiliate marketing must be transparent about their roles, affiliate links and referral codes, and people who livestream to sell, including KOLs and KOCs, must complete identity verification before broadcasting.

  • Ask creators to use the product before filming
  • Require disclosure at the start of the video and in the caption
  • Keep claims inside the product's approved documents

10. Tracking freecast: link every sample to a result

Freecast generates many small records, which is exactly why it gets messy. Every sample should become a booking record with a status, even though no fee is attached.

Use the same stages as paid bookings and add two freecast-specific fields: commission rate and affiliate GMV. When a creator posts, log the URL; when sales arrive, attach them to the same record. That is how you find the small group of creators worth upgrading.

  • Status: invited, opted in, shipped, delivered, posted, no post
  • Live URL and posting date
  • Affiliate orders and GMV per video
  • Follow-up count and last contact date

11. From freecast to paid: building a creator bench

The best use of freecast is as a filter. It shows you which creators can sell your product to their audience, cheaply and with real data.

Move proven freecast creators into paid bookings, higher commission tiers or livestream sessions. Offer them early access to new products. Over a few cycles you build a bench of creators who already know the product, which lowers the cost and risk of every later campaign.

  • Rank creators by affiliate GMV and content quality
  • Offer top performers a paid video or a livestream slot
  • Raise commission or add a bonus for repeat sellers
  • Drop creators who opted in but never posted

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does freecast mean in Vietnamese influencer marketing?

Freecast is a collaboration where the KOC receives a free sample and earns affiliate commission on sales instead of a fixed booking fee. It is agency and industry slang rather than an official platform term, and some deals add a coordination fee or bonus.

Is booking KOC freecast really free?

No. You still pay for samples, packaging, shipping, commission on every order, platform fees and often an agency coordination fee. Calculate cost per posted video, not cost per sample sent.

Does freecast work for a brand new product?

Usually not on its own. Without a live listing, an affiliate plan and some early reviews, creators have little to earn. Seed a small group or run paid content first, then open freecast once the listing converts.

How do I stop KOCs taking samples and not posting?

Use a written opt-in form, ship quickly after opt-in, follow up on a schedule and track each sample as a booking. Some non-posting is normal; remove repeat non-posters from future invitations.

Do freecast creators have to label content as advertising?

Yes. Under the amended Advertising Law, influencers must announce advertising immediately before and during it, and a commission deal is still a commercial arrangement. Include disclosure in the brief and check it before counting a post as complete.
