Ad-Ready Creator Videos: Delivery Specs and Checklist

The most common rework loop in creator ads is not creative at all: a video arrives with burned-in captions in the wrong place, no raw clips, and music nobody can license for paid use. This guide gives you a delivery spec sheet to put into your brief. Platform limits quoted here come from TikTok's own Ads Manager help pages, which change, so check the current page before you finalise a template.

Short answer

What specs should an ad-ready creator video meet?

Ask for vertical 9:16 video exported at 1080x1920, well above TikTok's 540x960 minimum, in a supported format such as MP4 or MOV, under the 500 MB limit. Request a clean version without captions, a captioned version inside the safe zone, raw clips and cleared music.

  • 9:16 vertical, 1080x1920 export
  • MP4 or MOV, under 500 MB, bitrate at or above 516 kbps
  • Key text and logos inside the platform safe zone
  • Clean version with no burned-in captions plus a captioned version
  • Raw clips and voiceover as separate files
  • Music cleared for paid use, or none
  • Consistent file names

1. Why do delivery specs matter for creator ads?

A video that works as an organic post may fail as an ad: captions covered by buttons, logos cropped, low resolution after compression, or music that cannot be used in paid placements. Each problem sends the file back to the creator and costs days.

Putting specs in the brief up front is cheaper than editing afterwards, and it makes it easier to turn one good video into several ad versions.

2. What does TikTok publish for in-feed ad videos?

According to TikTok Ads Manager help on Auction In-Feed Ads (last updated June 2026), non-Spark vertical video should be 9:16 and at least 540x960 pixels, with horizontal 16:9 at least 960x540 and square 1:1 at least 640x640. Accepted formats include .mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .3gp and .avi, file size is up to 500 MB, bitrate at least 516 kbps and duration up to 10 minutes.

TikTok also states that Spark Ads pulled from an existing post have no specific restrictions as long as the post is uploaded to the app. These are platform rules for one placement; other placements and Meta have their own, so verify on the current official page.

  • 9:16 vertical is the recommended shape
  • Minimum 540x960 for vertical
  • File size 500 MB or less
  • Bitrate 516 kbps or more
  • Several formats accepted, MP4 is the safe default

3. Which resolution should creators export?

TikTok publishes minimums, and its small-business video guide suggests exporting at 1080x1920 or higher for crisp playback. Ask creators to film at the highest vertical setting their phone offers and export at 1080x1920 without extra compression.

Avoid sending files through chat apps that recompress video. Ask for delivery through a shared drive link.

4. What is the safe zone and how should you use it?

The safe zone is the area where text and logos will not be covered by platform buttons, captions or the profile line. TikTok states that its size depends on the dimension, the ad caption length and any extra formats, and it provides downloadable safe zone files on its help pages.

Ask editors to keep key text, product name and logos inside the safe zone from the template that matches your placement, and keep the ad caption short. Third-party guides quote pixel margins that disagree with each other, so use the official template.

5. Why ask for a clean version and a captioned version?

A clean version has no burned-in captions, stickers or overlays. It lets you change language, offer or call to action, test new hooks and localize for other markets without reshooting.

A captioned version is the ready-to-run cut, with captions inside the safe zone. Ask for both, plus the caption text as a document so it can be reused.

6. Which raw files should creators deliver?

Raw clips let your editor rebuild the opening, tighten the pace or create cutdowns. Ask for the original takes, any voiceover audio and product shots, separate from the final export.

  • Final captioned video
  • Clean video without captions
  • Original clips in the camera resolution
  • Voiceover audio if recorded separately
  • Thumbnail or cover frame if requested
  • Caption text and hashtags as a document

7. What should you ask about music and sound?

Trending sounds available in an organic app are not automatically cleared for paid use. Platforms have commercial music libraries for ads, and the rules differ by placement and market.

The simplest rule for briefs is: no music unless it is licensed for paid use or taken from the platform's commercial library, and the creator states the source in the delivery note.

8. How should you name and organize files?

Use one pattern so anyone can find the right version months later: brand, product, creator handle, hook number, version and date.

Keep each campaign in a folder with sub-folders for final, clean and raw, and record the Spark Ads code or partnership permission next to the file name.

9. How do you review a delivery quickly?

Use a short checklist: format and resolution, safe zone, claims against your claim sheet, disclosure, music, and presence of the clean and raw files. Return one consolidated list of changes, not a trickle of messages.

Agree the number of revision rounds and review turnaround in the brief.

10. How does this apply to GMV Max and Spark Ads?

Spark Ads pull an existing post, so the in-app post must already meet your standard. For ads that use uploaded files, the specs above apply. Either way, authorization codes and usage rights should be recorded before spend starts.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What aspect ratio should creator ad videos use?

TikTok recommends 9:16 vertical for in-feed ads, and also accepts 1:1 and 16:9 for non-Spark ads. Ask for 9:16 as the default.

Is 1080x1920 required?

No. TikTok lists 540x960 as the minimum for vertical, but exporting at 1080x1920 gives a sharper result and room for cropping.

Do I really need raw clips?

They are optional but save the most time. They let you re-edit hooks, create cutdowns and fix issues without a reshoot.

Can creators use trending music in ads?

Not automatically. Use music licensed for paid use or from the platform commercial library, and ask the creator to state the source.

Where do I find the official safe zone?

TikTok provides downloadable safe zone files on its ad specification help pages. Use the file for your placement and caption length.
